Tendencies Wall Sculpture
Tendencies is a sculptural wall piece that explores fracture, connection, and the quiet resilience of the human spirit. Formed as a broken circle, the artwork is composed of two separate pieces intentionally installed off-center so the larger segment hangs slightly higher on the wall. When displayed this way, the flowing pattern visually continues from one piece to the other, creating a dynamic diptych that feels both divided and unified.
Each surface is meticulously constructed from hand-folded cardstock discs in black and gold, individually shaped and adhered to the substrate. The discs spiral and cascade in an organic rhythm, creating a textured surface that shifts with light and shadow, drawing the eye through the continuous movement of the composition.
The work was inspired by the recent events in Minneapolis, Minnesota—the artist’s hometown—during a period of heightened tensions surrounding federal operations and protests across the city, events that deeply affected communities throughout Minnesota and reverberated across the country.
Within the piece, color and form carry symbolic meaning:
-
Black represents the heaviness felt in the hearts, homes, and families of the community.
-
Gold emerges within the darkness as moments of light—symbols of hope, compassion, and humanity.
-
The broken circle reflects a community fractured by conflict and grief.
-
The continuous flowing pattern connecting both halves speaks to resilience, and solidarity.
Despite its fracture, the piece resolves into a quiet sense of harmony—an acknowledgment that even in moments of division, empathy and collective strength can create something profoundly beautiful. Total diameter measures approximately 27 inches.
